Das
nationale Jahrmarktarchiv
Das nationale Jahrmarktarchiv (NFA) wurde 1994 vom Vizekanzler
der Universität Sheffield mit Unterstützung der
Gilde der Schausteller Großbritanniens und dem Jahrmarktverband
von Großbritannien eingeweiht. Es ist in der Hauptbibliothek
untergebracht und umfasst eine einzige Sammlung von Fotografien,
Druckerzeugnissen, Manuskripten und audiovisuellen Materialien,
die nicht nur alle Aspekte der Kultur der reisenden Schausteller
beleuchten, sondern auch ihre Organisation als eine Gemeinschaft,
ihre Geschichte in der Gesellschaft und ihr tägliches
Leben sowie die Artefakte und die auf den Jahrmärkten
zu findenden Maschinen beschreiben.
Die NFA-Sammlungen wachsen stetig an: Etwa 80.000 Abbildungen
beinhaltet die fotografische Sammlung, dazu kommen Audio-
und Videomaterialien, Zeitungen und Zeitschriften und annähernd
4000 Monografien. Die Sammlung enthält auch einen einzigartigen
Korpus von mit dem Jahrmarkt verbundenen Drucksachen (Programme,
Flugblätter, Plakate, Urkunden und Proklamationen,
Pläne und Zeichnungen). Im Mittelpunkt der Sammlung
ist das Zeitungs- und Ausschnittsarchiv mit einer vollständigen
Sammlung der Ausgaben der Schaustellerzeitung World’s
Fair.
Das Archiv hat auch finanzielle Unterstützung seitens
verschiedener karitativen Organisationen in Großbritannien
erhalten, um mehr als 60.000 fotografische Abbildungen zu
digitalisieren. Diese sind im Archiv zur Ansicht verfügbar,
wobei eine diesbezügliche Auswahl auf der NFA-Website
erscheint sowie in einer Reihe von fotografischen Fachbibliotheken
veröffentlicht und an 20 regionale Bibliotheken geliefert
wurde.

The National Fairground Archive (NFA) fut inaugurée
par le recteur de l’université de Sheffield
en 1994, avec le soutien de la Showmen's Guild of Great
Britain et de la Fairground Association of Great Britain.
Archivée dans la bibliothèque principale,
c’est une collection exceptionnelle de documents photographiques,
imprimés, manuscrits et audiovisuels couvrant tous
les aspects de la culture des forains, de leur organisation
en tant que communauté, de leur histoire sociale
et de leur vie quotidienne. Elle présente aussi des
objets en rapport avec les champs de foire et dévoile
les rouages de la fête foraine.
Les collections de la NFA continuent de s’étoffer
: la collection photographique comprend quelque 80.000 images,
en plus des documents audio et vidéo, des journaux
et des magazines, et de près de 4.000 monographies.
Cette collection comporte également une série
unique de documents d’époque éphémères
en rapport avec les foires (programmes, prospectus, affiches,
chartes et proclamations, plans et dessins). Elément
central de la collection : les archives de journaux et de
coupures de presse, dont l’ensemble des numéros
de la revue pour forains World’s Fair.
Ces archives ont aussi bénéficié des
fonds de diverses associations charitables du Royaume-Uni
pour la numérisation de plus de 60.000 images photographiques.
Celles-ci peuvent être consultées dans les
archives et une sélection d’entre elles est
publiée sur le site Internet du NFA et dans un certain
nombre de photothèques consacrées à
ce sujet et fournies à 20 bibliothèques régionales.

una collezione unica di materiale fotografico, stampato,
manoscritto e audiovisivo che tratta di tutti gli aspetti
della cultura dello spettacolo viaggiante, la sua organizzazione
come comunità, la storia sociale e la vita di tutti
i giorni, i manufatti e le macchine delle fiere.
Le collezioni NFA continuano a crescere: oltre al materiale
audio e video, circa 80.000 immagini nella collezione fotografica,
quotidiani e riviste e quasi 4.000 monografie. L’archivio
contiene anche un corpo unico di oggetti e curiosità
legati alle fiere (programmi, volantini, poster, documenti
di concessione e proclami, progetti e disegni). Ruolo centrale
della collezione occupa l’archivio di giornali e ritagli
con na sezione completa dedicata al World's Fair, la rivista
dello spettacolo viaggiante.
L’archivio ha ricevuto finanziamenti da varie associazioni
di beneficenza nel Regno Unito per riversare in digitale
oltre 60.000 immagini fotografiche. Sono consultabili nell’archivio
e una parte è presente anche sul sito Internet NFA
ed in numerose gallerie fotografiche fornite a 20 librerie
regionali.

Het wordt ondersteund door het Showmen’s Guild of
Great Britain en de Fairground Association of Great Britain.
Het archief is gehuisvest in de hoofdbibliotheek. Je vindt
er een unieke verzameling materiaal over alle aspecten van
de cultuur van reizende kermisexploitanten. De manier waarop
hun gemeenschap is georganiseerd, hun sociale geschiedenis
en dagelijks leven, apparaten en voorwerpen van de kermis:
het komt allemaal aan bod in audiovisueel materiaal, boeken,
drukwerk, foto’s en handschriften.
De verzamelingen van het NFA groeien gestaag. Ze bevatten
beeld- en geluidsopnamen, kranten, tijdschriften en bijna
4.000 monografieën. Daarnaast omvat de fotoverzameling
zo’n 80.000 opnamen! De collectie behelst voorts een
unieke hoeveelheid gelegenheidsdrukwerk en verzamelobjecten
(zoals affiches, oorkondes, programmaboekjes, schetsen,
strooibiljetten en tekeningen). Hart van de verzameling
is het knipsel- en krantenarchief, met onder meer álle
nummers van het vakblad The World’s Fair.
Het archief kreeg financiële steun van verscheidene
Engelse liefdadigheidsinstellingen. Daarmee kunnen meer
dan 60.000 foto’s worden gedigitaliseerd. Die kunnen
in het archief worden geraadpleegd. Een selectie wordt gepubliceerd
op de website van het NFA. Verder krijgt een twintigtal
regionale bibliotheken de beschikking over een aantal opnamen.

The National Fairground Archive (NFA) was inaugurated by
the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield in 1994,
with the support of the Showmen's Guild of Great Britain
and the Fairground Association of Great Britain. Housed
in the Main Library, it is a unique collection of photographic,
printed, manuscript and audiovisual material covering all
aspects of the culture of travelling showpeople, their organisation
as a community, their social history and everyday life;
and the artefacts and machinery of fairgrounds.
The NFA collections are continuing to grow: there are some
80,000 images in the photographic collection, in addition
to audio and video material, journals and magazines, and
nearly 4000 monographs. The collection also includes a unique
body of fairground ephemera (programmes, handbills, posters,
charters and proclamations, plans and drawings). Central
to the collection is the newspaper and cuttings archive
including a complete run of the Showman’s newspaper
the World's Fair.
The archive has also received funding from various charitable
bodies in the United Kingdom to digitise over 60,000 photographic
images. These are available for consultation in the archive
and a selection are published on the NFA website and in
a number of dedicated photographic libraries supplied to
20 regional libraries.
